GRAY DROVE TO HALI’S PARENTS’ HOUSE. His nerves were off the charts, but he was determined to make Hali happy. That meant he was going to have to make nice with her parents … even if her father was initially a pain. Eventually, he would wear the man down from sheer force of will if he had to. It was the best thing for Hali, so he would make it happen.

“My mother is going to love you,” Hali assured him as they walked up the front steps. “She’s going to immediately ask for your opinion about marriage. Ignore her. She’s just a mom.”

He let loose a low chuckle. “I can deal with your mother. She seemed fine when we met.”

“My brother is going to invite you to play video games with him. Say no. He needs to get a job.”

“I’ve got it.”

“My sister is going to be annoyed that everybody else met you and she didn’t. She’s got issues as the oldest child. She thinks that means she’s in charge.”

“Are you saying you don’t have issues as the middle child?”

“Oh, I have issues.” Hali paused with her hand on the door. “I have Jan Brady Syndrome, and it’s not pretty. I never got the full attention of anybody growing up, and it made me bitter.”

He leaned in, his gaze intense. “You have my full attention.”

“That’s good, but you’d probably better not look at me that way in front of my father unless you want him to sit in the corner and glare the whole time.” She gave him a quick kiss. “Are you ready?”

Looking in her eyes, he felt ready for anything. “Let’s do this.”

Hali gripped his hand as they entered the house. The living room was small but homey. It was also empty. She led him toward the sound of voices, and he sucked in a breath when he realized the kitchen was already full of all the members of her immediate family.

“I’m here,” Hali called out, keeping her hand in his. “And I brought someone with me.”

Gray cringed at her singsong voice, but he kept his shoulders squared when four sets of eyes swung to him. As an investigator, he naturally fell back on his instincts and gauged each reaction.

Hali’s mother, Joyce, pressed her hands together in front of her and looked to the ceiling, as if uttering a silent prayer. She looked thrilled.

Her father, Steve, narrowed his eyes and didn’t immediately speak.

Annie’s eyes looked like saucers. She focused on Hali first, as if trying to gauge whether or not this was a joke, and then she gave Gray an appraising look. It was impossible to tell if she liked what she saw.

As for Hali’s brother, Jesse only briefly glanced up from his phone. He was clearly messaging with his gaming friends because his disinterest was obvious. “Hey, man,” he said absently.

“Hello.” Gray’s mouth was dry. “It’s nice to see you all again.”

“You haven’t met me before,” Annie pointed out.

“No, and I’m glad we get to rectify that today.
